Proximo: Helping Out at the Magical Taxi Tour
As with many other successful companies, Proximo is always looking to give something back to the community whenever we can. It’s an obligation we feel very strongly about and our staff are always willing to get involved.
Every so often we get to take part in a special event and this year it was helping out with the Magical Taxi Tour.
We’ve had an association with the Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers for a while now. Despite the slightly grandiose name, they’re a collection of London cab drivers who all have a similar outlook on life and want to preserve the standards of the hackney cab trade in the Capital.
Of course, cab drivers are well known for their generosity and part of their charitable endeavours includes the annual Magical Taxi Tour. This is a brilliant charity weekend that allows critically-ill children who are spending time at hospitals such as Great Ormond Street to have a weekend of travel and excitement courtesy of London hackney taxi drivers.
This year was the 25th anniversary of the event and Proximo were proud to get involved. We donated 3 vehicles to the fleet and two of them were driven by members of staff – national sales director Gavin Cooper and hackney network manager Dave Neale. The event is a three day trip to Disneyland Paris, with the families travelling in the back of iconic London taxis.
While many of the children that were taking part are facing terrible struggles with their health, it was amazing to see the amount of joy and happiness a brief respite such as this can bring. Gavin and Dave were able to find out about this up front and discover all the good work that the Magical Taxi Tour does.
The troupe of nearly 100 taxis starts off from Canary Wharf in London and heads over the channel via Calais, Assevilliers and then to Paris and the Disneyland complex. Of course, many of the families would not be able to take this journey alone, so a special thanks goes to the many medical staff who also took part in the event.
The convoy itself is quite spectacular and a fun thing to be a part of as our staff found out over the weekend. It can stretch over 3 miles as it heads towards Paris. The whole event is supported by many sponsors who help raise the money to cover the cost of travel, the ferry crossing and hotel accommodation. The convoy usually starts at Canary Wharf where a big breakfast is put on as well as some fun entertainment for the kids before the journey starts in earnest.
We were proud to receive a thank you note shortly after from the family who were in Gavin’s cab for the journey. Kirstie, Charlie and Freddie certainly warmed our hearts too:
“We were very lucky to have you as our driver and to be treated to a truly magical weekend to Disneyland Paris. Everything you do from the hundreds of miles driving, to making sure we are all ok and dropping us back to our house is really appreciated and never went unnoticed. I don’t think saying thank you will ever be enough but THANK YOU! I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend for me and the boys.It has been the perfect distraction while we wait for Charlie’s latest scan results.
“Much love and thank you again, Kirsty, Charlie & Freddie”
